Résumé: Within Quebec’s system-wide reform initiative, the Quebec Education Program (QEP), the assessment of students’ skills has been a contentious issue. A large segment of parents has been critical not only of the evaluation method, but also of the way these results are communicated to them. And while these negative views have been widely documented in the media, little is known about the views of parents who support the QEP’s evaluation methods. The authors present the findings of their study to better understand the needs of parents in terms of assessment practices, with a focus on those parents who are satisfied overall. The article reveals parents’ views and needs with regard to report cards, which are considered the most important communication tools between schools and families. Based on their findings, the authors advocate for greater collaboration between schools and families, suggesting that teachers need to have more time and improve their communications skills to maximize their interactions with parents, while parents’ daily engagement with educators is also essential to their child’s school success. This study will lead to further applied research projects on school-family collaboration in the field of skills assessment.
